An Introduction To Immunodiagnostics

In this article, we cut through confusion and provide a simple introduction to immunodiagnostics. Pro-Lab Diagnostics specialises in manufacturing and distributing laboratory equipment and tools used for microbiology and immunodiagnostics.

Let’s jump right in…

What Is Immunodiagnostics?

Immunodiagnostics is a range of laboratory diagnostic techniques used in a wide variety of industries to detect everything from infectious diseases and metabolic disorders in healthcare to pathogenic microorganisms in food.

How Does It Work?

Immunodiagnostics rely on a unique antibody-antigen reaction. An antigen is any “foreign body” that triggers a response from the immune system. Common antigens include bacteria, viruses, chemicals, allergens and toxins.

Antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins) are produced by our immune cells as part of the body’s protective response to antigens. Each antibody that the body produces is specifically produced to bind to a specific antigen.

Once the antibody is bound to the antigen, it can identify, target and neutralise the antigen, which often leads to its destruction or removal from the body. This antibody-antigen binding reaction is the pillar of most immunodiagnostic tests.

The Importance Of Immunodiagnostics

Immunodiagnostics is an invaluable tool that plays a vital role in healthcare across the globe. It is a fast, effective and reliable way to accurately identify and understand diseases so that they can be treated accordingly.

Immunodiagnostics provides an in-depth understanding of a wide range of health conditions and diseases, including cancers, metabolic disorders, infection diseases and cardiac conditions.

Advancements in immunodiagnostics have enabled scientists and health experts to develop target treatments and therapies.

Common Types Of Immunodiagnostics

Immunodiagnostics is continuously evolving and there is now a wide range of immunodiagnostics techniques. Some of the most widely used techniques include:

  • Immunoprecipitation techniques are used to isolate and identify a single antigen within a group of mixed antigens. They include chromatin immunoprecipitation, individual protein immunoprecipitation (IP), protein complex immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), tagged proteins and RNP immunoprecipitation (RIP).
  • Immunoassay tests use antibodies and antigens to detect and measure the concentration of macromolecules in a solution. Enzyme immunoassays are widely used to test for infectious diseases. Lateral flow immunoassays were used around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic to identify the virus, enabling people to prevent the spread where possible.
  • Immunofluorescence is a light microscopy-based technique primarily used on body tissues and cells. It can detect antigens bound to antibodies that have been tagged by fluorescent dyes.

Other widely used immunodiagnostics include cell-analysis techniques and blotting techniques.

Pro-Lab Diagnostics Role

Pro-Lab Diagnostics is a leading manufacturer and distributor of laboratory equipment. We are proud to be trusted and known as a valued support of the global hidden health service.

Founded in 1974, Pro-Lab Diagnostics has spent decades developing effective laboratory supplies specifically for use in microbiology and immunodiagnostics.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our team worked tirelessly to develop and supply the NHS with antibody testing kits and lateral flow kits.

We have various product ranges, which are used by microbiologists and laboratory technicians around the world, including:
